On a black history tour, your group may visit the remains of the Underground Railroad, a term describing a local place where aid and assistance was given to fugitive slaves from bondage; the First African Baptist church, the oldest in North America; the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum, dedicated to the life and service of African-Americans and their contributions to civil rights and equality and justice in Savannah; Laurel Grove Cemetery-South, a burial land for “free persons of color and slaves”; King-Tisdell Cottage, a restored 1896 Victorian cottage which serves as a cultural museum, emphasizing the contribution of African-Americans to Savannah's and U.S. history; and more.

In addition, learn about the Geechee and Gullah people, descendents of African slaves who settled along the Georgia Coast. Their influences on Savannah are chronicled through our food, music, churches and culture.

Savannah, Georgia's oldest black community is one of the most historically significant African-American cities in the nation. Experience the culture and learn about their struggles as the stories are retold each day so that we may never forget the heritage and influence.
