Celebrating 100 Years of Girl Scouting

ON MARCH 12, 1912, Juliette Gordon Low gathered 18 girls to register the first troop of American Girl Guides in Savannah, Georgia.  The name of the organization was changed to Girl Scouts the following year. From the original 18 girls, Girl Scouting has grown to 2.6 million members. Girl Scouts is the premier leadership development organization for girls in the world and has influenced the more than 50 million girls, women and men who have belonged to it.  In 2012, Girl Scouts will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the organization!  Many exciting events await our girls throughout the three years leading up to the Girl Scouts’ 100th Anniversary.

Celebrate 100 years of Girl Scouting in the United States and the life of the Girl Scout Founder, Juliette Gordon Low, at her childhood home. Camporee
June 25-30, 2012

Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia has formed a partnership with the Georgia Garrison Training Center at Fort Stewart to host a National Camporee to celebrate the 100th Anniversary!  The Camporee will hold a wide range of educational experiences and skill-building activities for girls with a focus on STEM and challenge/team-building programs, such as geocaching, astronomy, robotics, engineering, riflery, photography and much more.  There will also be opportunities to experience the traditional activities that Girl Scouts have honed and enjoyed for nearly 100 years; archery, compass skills, signal, semaphore, Morse code, map reading, outdoor cooking, craft making, song shares, campfires, swaps, nature studies and, of course, S ‘mores!  All who attend this event will connect with new camp mates from across the United States and across the world!  While the specific programs and details are still being discussed and finalized, many people have already expressed interest in celebrating the centennial with us at this event.
